Did Brian Kelly screw up by going to CMU?

Web posted on December 30, 2003 at 22:49

Today, I found out Brian Kelly, who was the head coach at Grand Valley State for 14 years, is taking the vacant head coaching job at Central Michigan University.

My (and Scott's) response?  What in the fuck is he thinking?!?!?!?!

Central Michigan is hardly has a good football program, as he said today.  What I don't understand is that a) Kelly recruited many people away from CMU to GVSU, and that he basically didn't like the school.  To top it off, he was quoted once as saying that he didn't want to go to a place where he'd be taking two steps back.

That is precisely what he is doing.

Grand Valley has appeared at the Division II national championship game three times in a row, and won the last two.  His winning percentage is .767 with a GLIAC record of .820.

Central Michigan's fame would amount to making *a* bowl... and those are the Motor City Bowl and the GMAC Bowl... hardly prestigious bowl games.  The MAC conference is a weak conference compared to the others (Big 10, Pac 10, ACC, Big 12, etc.).  They have no chance really of making one of the major bowls (Sugar, Rose, Fiesta, and Orange).  They have no chance of winning a National Championship (especially under the current BCS system).

My feeling that it's a lose-lose situation.  Kelly's career will bomb (a career suicide move as we term it) and GVSU will no longer dominate Division II.

Thoughts?  Catch me at my contact form.
