Some people say that the best coasters don't have to be the tallest or the fastest. Well, you can safely say that about Shivering Timbers, which has ranked as the #2 wooden roller coaster in the world for the 2nd year in the row by Amusement Today magazine (only eclipsed by the Raven at Holiday World), is one of the best.
I had the chance to help in operating the ride a couple of times, mainly in checking restraints and operating the dispatch enable button for Timbers, and I must say, like Magnum, I couldn't get bored in operating this ride.
Timbers, which is termed as a "mega out-and-back coaster" by some, really does pack a punch. Designed and built for $4.5 million by Michigan's Adventure and Custom Coasters International for the park's 30th anniversary under Roger Jourden's ownership (the park was purchased by Cedar Fair in 2001), takes you almost a half mile out to the eastern boundary of the park and back among hills that provide a whole bunch of airtime while providing some great lateral g's in its turnaround and in its helix.
This coaster is a must-ride. Ride it as many times as you can. If you visit during the summer, the best time is during the middle of the week, when people are at the water park, then waits are usually less than 10 minutes.
I know it's a wooden coaster, and sometimes it can give headaches or other pains, but this coaster is worth it! |
